Jae Jo | Issue Nine Interview

Tell us a bit about yourself, your background and your work

I am working in the UK and South Korea. My major was the painting in Royal College of Art, and my most interesting thing is the reaction of the subjects in the city where the excess of information and the environment coexists. I mostly focus on the rule of the artist in unconscious history which is changed by the world, and meanwhile I have performed the painting which is mixed by the landscape based on scattered images of the city and installation which tries ‘collection’ and ‘restructure’ of urban landscapes by using wire, rubber hose, plastic bucket, silicon, plaster, and brick. I had showcase solo exhibition <5 Minutes Rest, then 30 Seconds> (2018) in Space 413 and I also participated in group exhibition <Radical Residency II> (2018) in Unit Gallery and < WE CAN ONLY HAVE FUN ON CERTAIN DAYS> (2019) in Stour Space.

What potential do you feel artists have to help bring about change?

Historically, artists used to form a community through exchanges and implications with those with similar problem consciousness and inclinations, while pursuing their own purpose. If competition is replaced by co-operation through the community, I think it will make a huge difference in society.

Tell us about the themes you pursue in your work

I would like to focus on “collection” and “restructure” at this point. In other words, why I had to collect landscapes and objects of the city and to restructure them? Also why the restructured works can’t be interpreted? The things that I would like to gain through the collection of materials for my work are that my perceptual and visual experiences disappeared. My experiences in the city have developed as the accumulation of the collection through sightseeing and consumption. As the city is the space of temptation were lots of different and attractive things, now I would like to suggest people should collect their own part which is extremely rich but can have scattered emotions. The reason why I was attracted by various views of the landscapes of the city and collect them is that I want to be the main which is following what the city has.I even continually would like to collect the landscapes of the scattered city in this exhibition. Furthermore, I would like to work more consciously about the problems of human’s perception and logic or rule of the city, which is reasonability. I don’t just adhere to the role of the artist as a historian in the unconscious world, but I want to collect the experiences more consciously in the city. Moreover, I will consider how I can interpret as one meaning from the scattered experiences which I collected.

What art do you most identify with?

I do identify with this fact that “I thought the exhibition is over but it continues in my head”.

Is there something you couldn't live without in your studio? what is your most essential tool?

There must be a refrigerator in my studio. If the refrigerator is empty or there is no food to eat right away, it is difficult for me to concentrate on my work.

What place do you think artists have in the political sphere?

Human beings are political animals. For this reason, artists are already engaged in political activities, indirectly or directly. So I identify artists, who can express more freely through a wide range of media like political critics.

What do you feel the role of artists and photographers is in society?

Artists are people who help to function by circulating various emotional energies of society with their artistic talents. They must play a role in spreading their unique energy to the world.

Are there any upcoming exhibitions or projects in the works?

I am preparing for my 7th solo exhibition early next year.
